Susan Rhea

Associate Marriage & Family Therapist

I am a strengths-based therapist who works to assist all my clients achieve their goals.

First, I develop a safe, supportive, and empathic relationship and space in which clients feel free to confidentially discuss their innermost needs and desires. Then, I strive to develop my clients’ strengths, skills, and resources. I believe “the person is not the problem, the problem is the problem” and that “all clients are experts on themselves”. Using post-modern and solution-focused techniques, I work with my clients to dissolve the problem.

Clients experiencing trauma and PTSD will be guided through Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I am certified in this modality and use it to promote resiliency and long-term wellness. I also very much enjoy working with couples. Couples learn important communication strategies that will help them to dialogue and turn frustrations into wishes. As a certified alcohol and drug counselor, I have worked well with clients suffering from addiction problems. The question to ask is “Not why the addiction, but why the pain?”

I graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. I then completed Addiction Studies at Pierce College to become certified as an alcohol and drug counselor and worked at numerous residential, out-patient, and sober-living facilities. From Pierce, I went on to complete my Master’s Degree in Psychology (with an emphasis On Marriage and Family Therapy) at Phillips Graduate University. I am a member of CAMFT and CCAPP. I am open to helping you become your best self through our collaboration.
